Antique Shipbuilder's Adze
This antique shipbuilder's adze does not date to the Viking
age, but the Norse-Vikings used adzes just like this for building their famous
Drakkar, or Dragon Ships! This
particular adze dates to the 19th Century I believe, and was found in a barn. The blade is 3 3/8 inches wide, and
the head is roughly 8 1/2 inches long.
The 31 7/8 inch handle has a curvature in it that was probably created
by warping, but ironically enough that curvature would actually allow better control
over your swing of the adze. The
handle shows signs of lots of use and sweat during it's lifetime. Whether you want an adze for
carpentry work, or just collect fine old antique tools, this is one very nice
old adze!
